Writing Playlist: Sorrow

Last week I created a writing playlist and I posted a few songs that always inspire me to sit down and write! This was a really cool project, and after one week I’m still listening to this playlist almost non-stop. I’ve had a lot of fun writing the past few days, and it makes me really happy that something as simple as a playlist has made me excited about writing again. Because I’m still in love with my playlist, I wanted to share a few more songs that have been the highlight of my writing over the past week. These are songs that I absolutely love listening to when I’m writing a particularly heavy or emotional scene.

A Window to the Past | Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

I have been in love with this song ever since hearing it in the movie. I absolutely love the opening and how it has this haunted feeling, yet is incredibly pretty. It’s so simple, and I find this is a perfect song for those lonely, sad scenes.

On Another’s Sorrow | A Little Princess

I often listen to the soundtrack for A Little Princess when I’m writing as I love every song, but this is definitely one of my favourites. To be honest, I don’t even listen to the lyrics that are in the song. I just love the sound of the voice and the overall feel of the music.

Harry & Hermione | Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

This is another song that I have loved since I first listened to the HP soundtracks. I think part of why I love it is because of what the song represents in the movies and from the books. Harry and Hermione are simply friends, and I love that this song is about two friends comforting each other in a moment of sadness. This song to me is as much about friendship as it is about sorrow, a simplicity that elevates the beauty of the song.

These are my favourite songs to listen to when I’m writing those hard emotional scenes. They have the perfect balance of beauty and sorrow. What are your favourite sad or emotional songs to write to? Let me know in the comments!

Writing Playlist Inspiration

There are a ton of different writing playlists out there, from essay playlists to songs perfect for writing poems. I think it’s super cool when authors create soundtracks for the books they’ve written and share them with their fans. It’s the perfect collection of emotions and sounds to accompany the story.

Even though I think they’re a really cool idea, I’ve never really considered creating a playlist for myself. My writing habits are traditionally very erratic, and creating a playlist that captures those moods didn’t really seem feasible. Typically I just throw on one of my favourite movie soundtracks as background noise and write to that – it’s quick and easy, and generally isn’t distracting while I’m working.

Yet as I’ve been trying to focus more on my writing and making better habits, I’ve realized that I continuously gravitate to a certain set of songs while I’m writing – somehow, without even noticing, I have created a writing playlist for myself. Over the past week I’ve been eagerly writing down song names I love as I’m writing, and I’ve now created a playlist that I’m totally in love with, and that makes me so excited to sit down and write. In the space of one week I have gone from liking the idea of something to being totally in love and inspired by this list.

And because I’m still really excited, I wanted to share a couple of songs with you! These are two of my favourite songs to listen to when I get into the writing mood. They just inspire me so much and after listening to them I’m always super pumped up and ready to write!

This is Berk | How to Train Your Dragon

This is the intro song from the soundtrack, and it is easily the song I play the most in my life. I crank up the volume before pressing play and those opening notes just get me every time. I don’t know how many times I’ve restarted this song just to listen to those few notes over and over. But I love the whole song and it really puts me in that adventure mindset I need for my stories.

King of Pride Rock | The Lion King

This is another song that immediately comes to mind when I’m getting into that writing mood. This one’s a bit long, but I love this song because it goes through such dark, intense tones, and sounds almost eerie at moments too. Any time I need to visit a dark or sad scene this song can start me off in the right place. Plus I absolutely love the peak of the song (around the 4:20 mark) and I could listen to this song over and over just for that moment.

Creating a writing playlist has been a very rewarding experience. It ended up being a lot of fun and now I’m very happy when I sit down to write. Have you listened to any authors book soundtracks, or created a writing playlist for yourself? Let me know in the comments! :)
